I used to hit the driver off the turf before whenever I needed a low fade or slice with distance. Well it wasn't actually off the turf. Usually it was from the woods and only if the lie was good enough or almost good enough. Anyway, it was a good way of avoiding the risk of balooning the ball up into the branches.

Can't do it with the driver I'm using now though.
