I had posted a question about this in another thread, so as not to threadjack, I will start my own.
- I have Yoda's DVD's and have seen all the vids and have the other PP's pretty much understood.
But PP#1 has me baffled, Yoda and everyone says that PP#1 is directly behind the shaft. However, when I take my grip, my left thumb sits more on top and slightly aft on the grip. Then my right hand goes on and that life line is more on the top to the aft-top of the shaft and I don't really "feel" a lot of pressure. At impact fix with FLW my PP#1 seems to be more on top of the shaft.
I have always tried to keep the thumbs and first fingers together, the ole hold a tee in there drill.
Yesterday I experimented just holding the club with my left thumb a little farther away from my first finger and more toward the backside and not top of the grip. Then when I put the right hand on I was able to definitely feel that bulge of the left thumb in the right lifeline when I did some waggles.
I need some guidance here. How could anyone who's grip was even the slightest bit weak with the left hand ever have PP#1 behind the shaft? If I take my normal grip and try to come down with PP#1 behind the shaft, I would be throwing the hosel into the ball it looks like.
Have you consulted Mr Kelley's teaching in 10-2-0?

But think of this too. Hitters Rotate their Grip. I assume that if you play a wedge, that its farther back in your stance, and rotated closed a bit (because playing it back opened the Clubface: Up on plane). If this is true, then your Driver may be gripped with your left Thumb on the Sweetspot Plane but on Wedges, a little more to the side of the Grip.
So I guess if you took your grip at Impact Fix for each of the different Clubs and had a Vertical Left Wrist, then you should discover this. If it's true.
I don't have the "little yellow book" to look that up.
I have always seen most teachings with a more neutral to just a hair strong grip. It seems when I get that left thumb more to side it is really making it a Zach Johnson type really strong grip.
But with that more neutral grip PP#1 is never behind the shaft unless the left arm is rolled clockwise which on the downswing if that is the case and you are late, then hosel rockets here we come as the hosel not the sweetspot is lagging.
I will have to look at impact fix and see what I see next.
So, what I should be doing is going for a vertical flat to slightly "insuranced" cupped left wrist at impact fix and the left thumb should be behind the shaft at that point pushing PP#1 with right lifeline and not on top, correct??? Then when I move back to adjusted address the clubface would be open and the grip would look to my eye to be stronger than normal?? Does that make sense?
