I now trust that the thrust and clubface may look like its going to send it right but the physics and geometry do not. Its harder to ingrain that though with a driver swing hitting. I hope I'm not steering you wrong. My understanding is the rules change slightly when you move from mid-body hands to impact hands. IMHO, the further forward you start your hands, the more you want the club to appear open. When I set up with impact hands and a dead square clubface, FORE LEFT!
