It's funny you say that. I actually had visions of someone being on the course, feeling the wrong move, and stopping mid swing out of habit.

The theory is(negative reinforcement)... if one does not perform a particular task correctly, he will not get his reward, the ball in this case. The ball actually drops down in a hole in the mat if you get off plane, or do various things improperly.
Positive reinforcement, would be if you do the task properly, the ball would pop up. In theory, either way can be used to train people.
