I read an article a few days ago where he said something along the lines of, "When my left arm is on the same angle as my shoulders at the top, I can't get 'stuck'."
I honestly don't see how that could have anything to do with anything. That, combined with all the importance the shaft plane is getting, makes me wonder what in the world he's being taught. Obviously he's a good enough athlete and has great coordination, as he makes it work somehow. He's probably just not doing what he thinks he's doing.

Agreed - in fact, when he was all over the place (bobbing even) during his not so great stretch, his swing looked 'limp'. Movement all over the place, lower body action and hip motion way off, and tempo WAY off. Wedges way off (sloppy wrists, lack of extensor action)
Yet that is when he 'looked' like what Haney teaches (as I understand it).
Then, when he went on his big birdie run, his swing looked a LOT like 2000/2001. Much, much more stable with the low body and SOLID flying wedges - just slightly flatter.

He feels if he does this, it is easier for him to transition into the ball without getting stuck.

You have no clue what this means though?
