Well, actually not an impact bag, I got a golf cart tire/rim. I took it outside and started whacking it. Flat left wrist, bent right wrist. A nice 'thud'. this would slide the tire along the ground a little. I would even say that it teaches 'heavy hands' thru the ball. Is this all I need to do? I think if i smack it about 100 times a day for the rest of the summer, I may be getting somewhere. Are there any drills or just keep hitting it?

Don't overdo it, you don't want messed up wrists, elbows, or shoulders. Do some slower swings and some quicker swings but don't go for a certain number. You may wish to get an impact bag which would probably have a little more give and be easier on the joints.

The reason you can't sustain the lag is because you are so eager to make the club move fast (a reaction to the intent of "hitting it far"). So on a full shot you throw it away too early, which doesn't happen for your short chip. (bts)

Lay it on
I try the lay the head as well as the shaft to the bag, not just the head. I find hitting the bag with a dowel is helpful in this regard.

Getting Tired? Bag it!
Get an Impact Bag, much better. As mrodock said, "easier on the joints". Just fill it up about 3/4 of the way with old rags, towels, etc. Much cheaper in the long run than a tire (because of inflation).

Go to the beach or a bunker and build a great wall of China and stay principled.

There are grains of truth in the quick sand. Let that one sink in.
