Right leg in downsving
 
Hello,

My instructor tells me to push with the right foot to start the downsving. I used to do hipslide. What is the difference between them?

Wow. I watched that video. Speed Skating. I saw Sliding but no Turning.


There are no "Legs" in Golf. Ya, ya, I know everybody uses the word "Legs", but because there are Many ways to use your Right Knee and Foot, the word "Leg" doesn't offer much clarity. Normally, the Knees serve Hip Motion. The Knees will bend and Straighten to allow the Hips to Tilt up or Down and Turn. By forcing the Knee Straight, you will inadvertently force that Hip Upwards.

But, for your Standard Procedure with a Full Pivot Stroke, let's consider 2 ways. We'll assume that your Right Knee is Bent at the Top of the Swing and the Weight is on the Inside of your Right Foot with even pressure from front to back.
  1. Use your Right Knee as an anchor or Backstop that your Hips Turn Against during the Downstroke. The More Weight You Transfer, The Harder/Faster Your Downstroke Turn Can/Will be. This Action stabilizes the Right Hip so that Hip Turn Motion is directed at the Left Hip,,,,meaning that the Left Hip will Turn out of the way (Clear) when motion begins, and when the Left Hip Stabilizes, continuing the Turn will pull the Right Hip Forward. The Right Knee and Foot respond to the Hip Turn and the Knee will be pulled Straight and the Right Heel will raise.

  2. Launch your Right Hip by straightening your Right Knee.

Concerning #2
. When do you stop pushing? How hard should I push for a 50 yard Pitch Shot. Do I push for Chip Shots? How Far Should I push the Left Hip? How does the Left Hip Turn (Clear) out of the way of my Right Hip during the Downstroke? Etc., Etc. If I run out of Right Leg should I push with my Right Foot? Can I bail out if I push too Hard or too soft? If I choose to push with my Leg, is there an optimal Stance Width for every Shot? What if I need to Straddle something while I swing in a Hazard and I have no bend in the Right Knee to allow a Push off? Should I learn #1 above, just in case?


Anyway, it's up to you. :) :)
