Why does this happen

No matter what i do, anything and everything..on the takeaway i stop for a look (during practice) at the clubhead when the shaft tries to get parallel.

For the life of me i DON'T know why but i always shut the face of the club.....WHY?

ANY ANSWER even a wrong one will be appreciated

thanks
H

HJ,

A clubface that appears "shut" during that part of the backswing may actually be "ok" if you're a hitter. The hitter's takeaway has no swivel so it's as if you keep the face "looking" at the ball during the takeaway.

If you're a swinger it sounds like you haven't performed a start-up swivel.

define "shut" . . . it is implicit in your post that shut = bad . . .what does the club look like? Is it "shut" by your definition at the top?

Thanks for the help

bucket, can you please explain just a bit more of your answer....and if you could advise how to bend it...

Thanks
Howard

shut

Let me see , how to explain it.

the club face at setup is facing the alternate target line

i start back and i look at the club face and it has gone from where it began to closed.

Wish i could explain it better

How do you have your left hand on the grip? If you "over bend" it will "arch" your left wrist. BUT if you have your left hand strong and you have a "visually" flat left wrist it's going to result in a shut face.

BUT there are plenty of cats have won Majors with a shut face.

So you gotta figure out do you want to fix it or not . . .

What do your bad shots do?

Basically you want to bend your right wrist enough to get the butt end of the club to be in-line with your left forearm. Stick a straightened coat hanger in the butthole (somebody please knock this one outta the joint) . . . see how your left wrist and your right wrist have to look in order to get the butt to line up with your arm.

That's how the Left Arm Flying Wedge works . . . BUT . . . there are plenty who have done other stuff . . .see below.

Here's "weak" grip "in-line" face

Here's "strong" grip "in-line" face (note the bend to keep it in line)

Here's "strong" grip arched "shut" (note the butt and the left arm OUT OF LINE)

elbow

The main...(well one of them) problem....is when the club is shut the right elbow is flying away from my side

Yes, It's obvious. You don't have to go into detail, it's too painful.

Have you considered that after you've done that a thousand times and it still doesn't work, that you might get better results if you try something else?

Please try 10-18-B. :)

Impact Fix as Nepalese Sherpa

Are you hitting or swinging?

Let impact fix guide you as to the amount of right wrist bend you need to support a FLV left wrist. I like to start from a form of fix (I generally swing) so as to NEVER disturb me wedges. Adding bend to the right wrist as Bucket said will cause the left wrist to arch. Keep the right wrist frosty. You can talk to an arched left wrist but a bent one don’t listen! Flat is optimal. It is not so much where the elbow is pointing, but whether or not it is supporting the loading! “It is not an elbow thing, but a loading thing.” - Yoda

Check out your own picture of Nicklaus at the top of his backswing (St. Andrews 18th tee) His elbow looks to be flying, but his flying wedges ain’t lying! Was it you?

Good point.........my frustration level is very high

Halfway Back

I would be happy to do it, if i knew how

i am not a slow learner.....or maybe i am......

Dude . .. where do the bad shots go? What is your grip like?

Daryl 02-09-2008 12:48 AM

Mike O can explain everything.

Gotta get the book!

Fortunately Daryl's sardonic sense of humor is matched by his keen intellect!
Great combo, really. But per usual he makes a good point. Buy the book. Golfers spend a lot of time flopping around searching for ways to describe this or that. HK gave us a workable vocabulary, a viable vernacular that is 100% easier to decode than groping around in the dark for a shared euphemism! Know what I mean?

There are some guys on this forum apart from Yoda that know the book as well as any dozen guys in the world. To benefit from their knowledge you gotta get a few eleventy-three B's down! You were just chided by one of them!

Don't think elbow, think FOREARM.Sounds like your elbow is leading the backswing.Trying to get the #3pressure point leading the forearm on the way back-(don't worry, your elbow will follow:) )
Your right hand will be more on the plane angle.
Clap your hands-do you start with the elbow?-No.
Good luck:salut:

kebeal 02-09-2008 11:04 AM

My advice is to keep the right elbow in place at the start of the backswing by swivileing or rotating your right forearm as if you were going to hand off a baton to someone standing to your right. When you have reached this position your right elbow should still be close to your side with your right forearm pointing straight away from your target. From this position simply cock your right forearm towards your right shoulder (this will also automatically cock your left wrist) to complete your backswing. Dont forget to allow your right hip turn behind you during all of this, otherwise you will have a limited shoulder turn.

Also, move into your impact condition and hold that pose for a while. Look and verify that your left wrist is flat and matches the leading edge of the clubface (in other words where the back of your left hand faces the clubface should too). If your grip is very strong or turned to the right at adress, the clubface will look very closed when you achieve a flat left wrist during the backswing.

A word of warning: I am no expert when it comes to TGM, and I definitley check my ego at the door when entering this forum. So if I am incorrect in my explinations or concepts please feel free to correct me.

Hijack,
Good clarification and that's exactly why Daryl - Only said "Mike O. can explain everything"- and didn't include "accurately"!

"Accuracy" was simply assumed. :)
