Do any historians out there know the origins of the old rule of thumb?

Many moons ago an English Judge ruled it lawful for a man to beat his wife with a stick provided the stick was no thicker than his thumb.
Hence, the "Rule of Thumb".:thumright

Latter day use of the term is related to approximate measurements
or commonly held beliefs.

"As a rule of thumb" one would hit a low running shot from uder overhanging tree branches, for example.

I think you have the wrong guy. Sorry. I am no longer looping. My last tournament was the 2009 US Senior Open at Crooked Stick. If only my player that week, not the former Ryder Cup captain, had more TGM knowledge than he got on Thursday of that week, he would have been fine. Unfortunately, even though he became more educated about TGM late Thursday, he hit his approach in the water on 18 Friday and MC'd by one. We worked the next few days after the tournament and it changed his perspective. I never, and never will touch a player's golf swing, but only change their INTENTONS and show them what is possible!!
