Seriously, a great accomplishment by BG to play in the Open. He didn't choke on it any more than #1 is right now.

choking is what the leaders have done for the last 12 or so holes, by not separating themselves. BG, while maybe did not play his best played a pretty damn good game, with the set up they had to play.

Disproportionate Rewards
 

I agree.

There are several holes where the shorter hitters must drive to narrow fairways, e.g., 18 yards wide, while longer hitters drive to far wider fairways, e.g., 30 yards wide. Also, bunkers that pose no problem for the longer brethren are absolutely in play for the shorter. So, in addition to the length and bunker-exemption reward, the longer hitters also get the wider fairway reward.

How do I know?

I paced the respective fairways off -- in disbelief -- on Wednesday.

No excuses for BG necessary or offered. After all, Fred Funk, another short-hitter and one who just turned 53-years-old, made the cut (on the number).

But . . .

He (and BG) played a far different golf course than did most in the field.

LynnBlakeGolf: Spent all day with wonderful group at Medina CC. Next four days: TOUR players at PGA. Both groups will improve. Today's will appear more.

LynnBlakeGolf: I am a huge Miguel fan. He's his own man. In the arena, he asks no quarter and gives none. Outside, he loves life and enjoys his own.

LynnBlakeGolf: I've adjourned to the empty south patio of Hotel Sofitel for a cigar and my own thoughts. A couple appears and assume the nearby table.

LynnBlakeGolf: I ask if my smoke will offend. "Oh no" says he. "You were here first. Besides, I'm going to have one of my own."

LynnBlakeGolf: I discreetly move down six tables on the empty patio. Mrs. Yoda's not here -- and Miguel and his lady deserve that space. :-)

LynnBlakeGolf: Most of the PGA players are in now. From the patio I count 22 Mercedes Benz S550 courtesy cars. Fittting transport for the world's best!

LynnBlakeGolf: Alone again on the patio. 12-wheelers roar down I-494 toward their destinations. Tomorrow, TOUR players will begin their prep in earnest.

A great guy, they call him the mechanic on tour and in the run up to the 2004 Ryder Cup, he is reported to have said to Bernard Langer in one of the team talks:

"I have just 3 demands.
1) Good Cigars
2) Good red wine
and 3) Good coffee, american coffee is sheeeeeeet"

I love the guy too. Ever since I saw his warm up routine at the 2008 Masters. He looked like he was waking up and wiping the sleep from his eyes, lit a cigar, did some back stretches for 10 minutes or so then hit a bit. Nice shoes too.

LynnBlakeGolf: After a full day on the tee and course at Hazeltine, I'm back on the patio at Hotel Sofitel. This time, Miguel A. Jimenez beat me here.

LynnBlakeGolf: This time sans lady but with male associate and cigar in full flame. Got a photo with him today at Hazeltine and told last night's story.
